Trouble Funk Guitar Lesson
I recently was talking with drummer Lil John Roberts – he hipped me to the band Trouble Funk and sent me a link to concert footage from their concert in Japan in 1988. I’ve heard of Trouble Funk before, but wasn’t too familiar with their music.
The first tune they opened up with blew me away! I had to tab it out and share it with you guys. It’s a bad ass lick played by the whole band with some nasty horns fattening it all up. Here’s the entire concert. The first tune is what we’ll be working on today:
Nasty, right?
Now let’s tackle that monster riff. It’s based on an Em Pentatonic Blues and has some cool Tri-Tone stuff thrown in. The big groove is very reminiscent of “Immigrant Song” by Led Zeppelin. Get ready to head bang!
Talking About Tone
Use a little Chorus on your lead sound in the Bridge position, then flip to the Neck position for the clean verse chords. Add a little Chorus effect to replicate the sound. Make sure you keep your picking hand moving with the groove – lift your fretting hand off the strings slightly so your picking hand continues to have that “scratching” Funk effect that we all love! The verse chords are Em9 and Gm9 back and forth.
